A direct flight from Edinburgh took us into Cracow on a wet Saturday night in early February, but it was actually milder there than the bleak Scottish weather we were having at home. Snow on the last day of our holiday added a bit of wintry magic to the city.
We rented an apartment on Florianska (first photo below), right next to the main square in the old town, and ideally located for shops, galleries and restaurants. Wawel Royal Castle was only 20 minutes walk and the Kazimierz (Jewish) Quarter was just another 10 minutes farther. Five days was long enough to see all the main attractions and to sample ample local vodkas (with a cup of chocolate, yum), Polish culinary delights – the wild boar and the goose were delightful – and to shop for amber, all at half the UK price.
Well worth a visit! If you go for more than 5 days then you may want to plan a day’s outing to Auschwitz and/or Zakopane.
