Drive around Estremadura, the region north of Lisbon, and you’ll discover numerous, picturesque fortified towns, market towns, fishing villages and religious centres. Below are photographs I took in Alcobaca, home of Portugal’s largest church, the medieval Mosteiro (Monastery) de Santa Maria de Alcobaca, followed by a few snaps of Nazare, with its gorgeously empty beach, then the Palace at Mafra, just north of our base at Ericeira.
