On Wednesday 27 June, at their 25th Anniversary Dinner in St Andrews, the British Golf Collectors Society Captain, David Kirkwood, presented author Pat Colledge with the 2012 Murdoch Medal for his book, The Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, 1761-2011.
Awarded for what the committee regards as the outstanding publication on the history of golf in the previous year, this means that, for the third year out of four, a book that I’ve had the privilege to design has received this Medal, following wins for Tom Morris – The Colossus of Golf by David Malcolm and Peter Crabtree in 2009 and Social Links – The Golf Boom in Victorian England in 2010 by Donald Cameron. And, before you ask, I was in the middle of producing the 280-page Bruntsfield book last year and didn’t enter the 2011 competition.
The gentlemen parading their fancy headwear in the photograph above appear in the first extant photograph of Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society c1855.
Below are cover and double page spreads of the three award-winning books.
