Head south from Ericeira or west from Lisbon and you’ll find Serra de Sintra, the wooded hills dotted with historic palaces. Here you can drive through a dramatic countryside with hairpin bends, surreal landscapes and some breathtaking views of the Atlantic coast.
The National Palace of Sintra, on the northern slopes, was a favourite retreat for the kings of Portugal. Nearby, on the highest peaks, sits the spectacular 19th century folly, the Palace of Pena. Driving eastwards, you’ll come to a dead end where the road reaches the most westerly point of the European mainland at Cabo da Roca, where crowds gather to appreciate the Atlantic sunsets.
