“In recognition of its high standard of achievement in golf literature, Tom Morris of St Andrews, The Colossus of Golf 1821-1908 has been named the recipient of the United States Golf Association’s Herbert Warren Wind Book Award”.
With these words in February 2009, the USGA announced its unanimous decision to honour the book, written by David Malcolm and Peter Crabtree, designed by Chic Harper, and published in 2008 by Glengarden Press.
‘Every 10 or 15 years, a book comes along that is truly a seminal contribution to the history of the game,” said Rand Jerris, director of the USGA Museum and Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History. “This is one of those books.”
The USGA announcement’s praise continued, “The book’s greatest contribution to golf literature is as an unparalleled source of original photos, artwork and primary documents …” and said that “the original research … and the graphic presentation of the book set new standards for golf biography and historical scholarship.”
